Meet Brittany

On December 6, 2014, my family and I were on a vacation in New York City. We were at a restaurant in Time Square getting ready to watch a college football game. We had just gotten settled at our table when I suddenly slumped over. My dad and a friend helped get me to the floor and called for help. Two restaurant guests came over and found I had no pulse. They started doing chest compressions and administering mouth-to-mouth breaths until paramedics arrived.

The paramedics used an automated external defibrillator (AED) and shocked my heart back into rhythm. We later learned I had an undiagnosed heart defect called Long QT Syndrome that can cause dangerous arrhythmias in response to certain medications, stress and exercise. I now have an implanted defibrillator to reduce my risk of having another cardiac event, but otherwise I live a normal, healthy, and full life. The work of the American Heart Association truly saved my life and thousands of others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ~ Brittany
